Chair Rail with Framed Panels
A chair rail with framed panels divides the wall into two coordinated zones. Upper and lower frames work together, making the horizontal rail part of a complete wall composition.

Design & material.
This treatment gives more structure than a rail alone. The frame widths can align across both levels, while their heights change to fit the wall. Matching the rail and frames to the wall color keeps the detail subtle; separate colors can make the two levels more distinct.
Installation details.
We check the rail against window sills, furniture, switches and adjacent rooms. Corners, doorways and changes in wall length need planned terminations so the rail does not end abruptly. The finish schedule covers the visible wall fields as well as the applied trim when painting is included.
How does this differ from half-wall wainscoting?
Half-wall wainscoting typically concentrates frames below a cap. This layout uses coordinated frames above and below a dividing rail, adding detail across more of the wall.
